Privacy policy
Last updated: October 20, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how Techniques Combat, operating as Techniques ("Techniques", "we", "us" or "our"), collects, uses, shares and protects personal information when you visit techniquescombat.com (the "Site"), shop with us, create an account, sign up for our emails or texts, write a review, apply to our athlete and affiliate programme or our wholesale programme, or contact us. Personal information means information about an identifiable person.
We follow Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and, for people in Quebec, Quebec's Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector. We also respect the privacy rights given by US state laws and, where they apply to us, the laws of the other countries we ship to.
Summary
- We collect the information we need to sell and deliver your order, run and protect our store and, if you agree, send you marketing.
- We do not sell personal information for money. We use advertising tools from Meta and Google; under some US state laws that counts as "selling" or "sharing", and you can opt out.
- Our store platform and many of our service providers store information outside Canada, mainly in the United States.
- You can unsubscribe from marketing at any time, control cookies, and ask to see, correct or delete your information.
- Questions and requests go to help@techniquescombat.com.
1. Who is responsible for your information
Techniques Combat is responsible for the personal information under our control, including information that our service providers handle for us.
Our Privacy Officer is accountable for our compliance with this policy and is the person in charge of the protection of personal information under Quebec law:
- Title: Privacy Officer, Techniques Combat
- Email: help@techniquescombat.com (please write "Privacy" in the subject line)
How we manage privacy
Our Privacy Officer oversees our privacy practices, including:
- deciding which team members and service providers may access personal information, and for what purposes;
- checking new tools and service providers before we use them, including any that store information outside Quebec or Canada;
- keeping and then deleting or anonymizing information according to Section 8;
- handling requests and complaints under Section 10; and
- responding to and keeping a record of security incidents.
2. Information we collect
Information you give us
- Order and contact details: your name, email address, phone number, billing and shipping addresses, the products you order and any notes you add.
- Payment information: payments are processed by Shopify and its payment partners, or by the other payment provider you choose. We see limited details, such as the card type, the last four digits and the billing address, but never your full card number.
- Account details: your login email, saved addresses and order history.
- Messages: what you send to customer service, such as sizing questions, return and exchange requests, and photos of products.
- Marketing sign-ups: your email address or phone number, the date, time and form you used to sign up, and your consent.
- Back-in-stock requests: your email address or phone number and the product you are waiting for.
- Reviews: your name or username, rating, review text, any photos or videos, and whether you bought the product.
- Athlete and affiliate programme applications: your name, email address, primary martial art, athlete level, social media handles and anything else you send us. If you join the programme, we also collect what we need to manage the partnership and pay you, such as payment and tax details.
- Wholesale applications and accounts: business name, contact details, business address, tax registration numbers and order history.
We do not ask for sensitive information such as health information. If you tell us about an injury, for example when asking about sizing or a return, we use that information only to respond to you. Please do not send us more than you need to.
Information we collect automatically
- Device and connection information: IP address, approximate location based on it (such as city or region), browser and device type, operating system, language and screen size.
- How you use the Site: pages and products viewed, searches, items added to your cart, checkout steps, links clicked, the website or ad that brought you to us, and the date and time of your visits.
- Session recordings and heatmaps: Microsoft Clarity records how visitors interact with our pages, such as clicks, scrolling and mouse movement, so we can find and fix problems. It is set to hide what you type into form fields.
- Security information: our bot-protection service (Armex) and Shopify log IP addresses, referring websites, request details and other technical signals to detect bots, fraud and attacks.
- Email and text interactions: whether you open our emails or click links in our emails and texts, so we can measure campaigns and keep our lists accurate.
- Cookies, pixels and similar technologies: see Section 6.
Information from other sources
- Shopify, including Shop Pay and the Shop app if you use them.
- Payment providers and fraud-screening tools: payment status and fraud-risk signals.
- Carriers and our fulfilment partner: delivery status and confirmation.
- Social media and advertising platforms: information you make available when you interact with our pages or ads, message us or tag us, and reports on how our ads perform, which are mostly aggregated.
- Our review provider: review and purchase-verification information.
- Shopper insights: for some orders, a service (OuterSignal) checks publicly available information to tell us whether a customer has a public social media profile with a large following, such as an athlete or creator. We use this only to find people we may invite to partner with us, and you can opt out (Section 10).
3. How we use your information
- To process and deliver your orders: take payment, prepare and ship orders, send order confirmations, shipping updates and receipts, and handle cancellations, returns, exchanges and refunds.
- To provide customer service: answer questions, solve problems and keep a record of what we told you.
- To run your account, if you have one.
- To send marketing you have agreed to receive: newsletters, product launches and offers, such as our first-order discount, by email or text (see Section 5).
- To send alerts you ask for, such as back-in-stock notifications.
- To collect and publish reviews: ask you for a review after a purchase and show reviews on the Site.
- To improve the Site and our products: understand how people use the Site, test changes, fix errors and decide what to make next.
- To advertise: measure which ads work, show our ads to people who are likely to be interested, including people who have visited the Site, and avoid showing some ads to existing customers (see Section 6).
- To run our athlete and affiliate programme: review applications, identify people we may invite to partner with us, manage partners, track sales made through partners' links and codes, and pay commissions.
- To run our wholesale programme.
- To keep the Site and our customers safe: detect and block bots, fraud, fake checkouts and attacks, and enforce our Terms of Service.
- To meet our legal obligations: keep tax and accounting records, respond to lawful requests, and deal with legal claims.
- To manage and finance our business, including sharing store sales data with a financing provider, and in connection with a sale, merger or financing of our business (see Section 4).
We use personal information only for these purposes, for purposes consistent with them, or as the law allows or requires. If we want to use your information for a new purpose that needs your consent, we will ask for it first.
Automated decisions: our payment and fraud tools assess orders automatically and may flag an order as high risk, and an order may be cancelled on that basis. If that happens to you, you can contact us to learn the main reasons and ask a person to review the decision.
4. How we share your information
We share personal information only as described in this section.
Service providers
We use service providers to run our store. They may use your information only to provide their services to us, under agreements that require them to protect it. Our main service providers are:
- Store platform, checkout and payments: Shopify and the payment processors that work with it.
- Warehousing, fulfilment and shipping: Kayo3PL and shipping carriers.
- Email and text marketing: Klaviyo.
- Sign-up forms and pop-ups: Alia.
- Reviews: Judge.me.
- Back-in-stock alerts: Restock Rocket and STOQ.
- Analytics: Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager, Microsoft Clarity, Triple Whale and Shopify's own analytics.
- Store features: Assortion (product bundles and recommendations), Buy Box (product page information) and Instafeed (our Instagram feed).
- Security and bot protection: Armex.
- Product listings: Simprosys, which sends our product catalogue to Google Shopping.
- Wholesale ordering tools.
- Shopper insights: OuterSignal.
- Business financing: Wayflyer, which reviews our store's sales data and may have access to order information for that purpose.
- Professional advisers, such as accountants and lawyers, and IT support.
Advertising and social media platforms
We use advertising tools from Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and Google. When you visit the Site, their pixels and tags can collect information such as your IP address, device and cookie identifiers, the pages you view, items you add to your cart and your purchases. Our Meta and Google integrations can also send purchase and other event information directly from our store platform, including email addresses and phone numbers in hashed (scrambled) form, so these platforms can match it to their users and measure our ads. Meta and Google also use this information under their own privacy policies, including to show ads and improve their services. You can control this as described in Section 6.
Programme partners
If you buy using an athlete's or affiliate's link or code, we may tell them that a sale was made and its value so we can pay them. We do not give them your name or contact details.
Legal and safety reasons
We may disclose information when the law requires or allows it, for example to respond to a court order or a lawful request from a government authority, to protect the rights, property or safety of our customers, our business or others, to prevent fraud, or to collect money owed to us.
Business transactions
If we sell, merge, finance or reorganize all or part of our business, we may share personal information with the other parties involved, under confidentiality obligations and as the law allows. Anyone who acquires it must use it only for the purposes described in this policy unless you agree otherwise.
With your consent
We may share your information in other ways if you ask us to or agree to it.
We do not sell personal information for money, and we do not sell it to data brokers.
5. Marketing emails and texts
We send marketing emails only to people who have agreed to receive them, for example by subscribing on the Site, ticking the box at checkout or signing up for our first-order offer, or where Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) and other applicable laws allow us to rely on implied consent, such as for up to two years after you buy from us. Every marketing email identifies us, includes our mailing address and has an unsubscribe link.
We send marketing texts only to people who have expressly agreed to receive them. Agreeing to receive texts is never a condition of buying from us. Message frequency varies, and message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to any text to unsubscribe, or HELP for help.
You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any marketing email, by replying STOP to a text, or by emailing us. We act on unsubscribe requests promptly, and in any case within 10 business days. We will still send you messages about your orders, your account and your requests, because those are not marketing.
6. Cookies, pixels and similar technologies
Cookies are small files that your browser stores. Pixels, tags and similar technologies are small pieces of code that send information to us or to other companies when a page loads or when you take an action. We and our providers use them for these purposes:
- Essential: to run the cart and checkout, keep you signed in, remember your currency and privacy choices, and protect the Site from fraud and bots. The Site cannot work without these, so they cannot be switched off in our cookie settings.
- Analytics: to understand how the Site is used (Shopify analytics, Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity and Triple Whale).
- Marketing: to measure our ads and show relevant ads on other websites and apps (the Meta pixel, Google advertising tags, Klaviyo's on-site tracking and our pop-up forms).
Your choices
- Cookie banner: where the law requires consent first, including in Quebec, the European Union, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, we show a cookie banner and do not use analytics or marketing cookies until you agree. Elsewhere, we may use them by default and you can opt out at any time. You can change your choices at any time using the privacy choices link in the footer of the Site.
- Browser settings: you can block or delete cookies in your browser. If you block essential cookies, the cart and checkout may not work.
- Global Privacy Control: if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as a request to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information and of targeted advertising for that browser, where our store platform supports it.
- Do Not Track: there is no common standard for "Do Not Track" signals, so we do not respond to them. We do honour Global Privacy Control as described above.
- Advertising opt-outs: Google My Ad Center, the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, Meta ad preferences, the Digital Advertising Alliance of Canada, the Digital Advertising Alliance (US) and the Network Advertising Initiative. If you opt out, you will still see ads, but they will be less tailored to you.
Microsoft's privacy statement explains how Microsoft handles Clarity data, and Shopify's privacy policy explains how Shopify handles store data.
7. Where your information is stored and processed
We are based in Ontario, Canada. Shopify and most of our other service providers and advertising partners store and process information in the United States, and some do so in Canada, the European Union or other countries. Information stored in another country is subject to that country's laws and may be accessed by its courts, law enforcement and national security authorities.
Before we send personal information outside Quebec or Canada, we assess the provider, including how sensitive the information is, why it is needed, the safeguards in place and the legal framework where it will be held, and we use agreements and other measures to require a level of protection comparable to what Canadian and Quebec law require. You can contact our Privacy Officer for more information about our providers outside Canada.
8. How long we keep information
We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purposes in this policy or as the law requires, and then we delete it or anonymize it. In particular:
- Orders, payments, returns and other transaction records: for six years after the end of the tax year they relate to, as Canadian tax law requires, or longer if needed for a legal claim.
- Account information: while your account is open. When you close it or ask us to delete it, we delete what we no longer need. Our store platform may complete deletion requests after a short holding period, for example while an order can still be returned or disputed.
- Marketing lists: until you unsubscribe. After that, we keep your email address or phone number on a suppression list so we do not contact you again, and we keep a record of your consent for three years.
- Customer service messages: for three years after our last exchange with you.
- Reviews: for as long as the review is published, or until you ask us to remove it.
- Back-in-stock requests: until we send the alert or you cancel the request, and in any case no longer than 12 months.
- Athlete and affiliate programme applications: if you are not accepted, for no longer than 12 months; if you join, for as long as you take part, plus the time needed for payment and tax records.
- Analytics and session-recording data: for the retention periods set in each tool. For example, Google Analytics keeps event-level data for no more than 14 months.
- Security logs: for the limited time needed to detect, investigate and prevent abuse.
9. How we protect your information
We use reasonable physical, organizational and technical safeguards that suit the sensitivity of the information, including:
- encrypted (HTTPS) connections across the Site;
- payment processing by Shopify and its payment partners, so we never see or store full card numbers;
- limiting access to the team members and providers who need it, and protecting our accounts with strong passwords and, where available, two-step verification;
- security and bot-protection tools that detect and block abusive traffic; and
- agreements that require our providers to protect personal information.
No method of sending or storing information is completely secure. If a breach of our security safeguards creates a real risk of significant harm to you (in Quebec, a risk of serious injury), we will notify you and report it to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and, where applicable, to the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec and other authorities, as the law requires. We keep a record of every breach.
10. Your rights and choices
Subject to the exceptions the law allows, you have the right to:
- know whether we hold personal information about you, see it, and get an explanation of how we use and share it;
- ask us to correct information that is inaccurate, incomplete or out of date;
- withdraw your consent, for example to marketing or to analytics and advertising cookies. Withdrawing consent does not affect what we did before, and it may mean we can no longer provide some services;
- ask us to delete your information, unless we have to keep it, for example for tax records or a legal claim;
- opt out of the shopper insights check described in Section 2;
- if you live in Quebec, receive the computerized information you gave us in a structured, commonly used technological format, and ask us to stop disseminating your information or to de-index links to it where the law allows; and
- make a complaint to us and to a privacy regulator.
How to make a request
Email help@techniquescombat.com with "Privacy request" in the subject line. To protect your information, we will confirm your identity first, usually by asking you to reply from the email address on your account or orders, or to confirm details of an order. You can ask someone else to make a request for you; we will ask for proof that they are authorized.
Requests are free. We respond within 30 days. If we need more time where the law allows it, or if we cannot do what you ask, we will tell you why and explain your options.
Complaints
If you are not satisfied with our response, please contact our Privacy Officer. You can also complain to:
- the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada;
- if you live in Quebec, the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec;
- if you live in the United States, your state attorney general or, in California, the California Privacy Protection Agency; or
- if you live in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, your local data protection authority.
11. Additional information for US residents
Several US states, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Oregon, Texas and Virginia, give their residents specific privacy rights. Whether or not a particular state law applies to us, we offer all US residents the following:
- the right to know what personal information we collect, use, disclose, sell or share, and to get a copy of it;
- the right to correct and to delete your personal information;
- the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information and of targeted advertising. You can do this using the privacy choices link in the footer of the Site, by turning on Global Privacy Control in your browser, or by emailing us;
- we do not collect sensitive personal information, so there is nothing for you to limit;
- we will not treat you differently, for example by charging a different price, because you use these rights; and
- the right to appeal: if we decline your request, reply to our decision with "Appeal" in the subject line, and we will respond within 60 days. If you are still not satisfied, you can contact your state attorney general.
Categories of personal information
In the past 12 months, we have collected the following categories of personal information, from you, from your device and from the other sources described in Section 2, for the purposes described in Section 3:
- Identifiers, such as name, email address, phone number, postal address, IP address, cookie and device identifiers, and account name. Disclosed to our service providers. Online identifiers, and email addresses and phone numbers in hashed form, are shared with Meta and Google for advertising.
- Customer records, such as name, address, phone number and limited payment information. Disclosed to our service providers. Not sold or shared.
- Commercial information, such as products viewed, added to your cart and bought. Disclosed to our service providers, and shared with Meta and Google for advertising.
- Internet and other electronic network activity, such as browsing on the Site and interactions with our emails and ads. Disclosed to our service providers, and shared with Meta and Google for advertising.
- Approximate location based on your IP address. Disclosed to our service providers, and shared with Meta and Google for advertising.
- Visual and electronic information, such as photos and videos in reviews and session recordings of how you interact with our pages. Disclosed to our service providers. Not sold or shared.
- Professional information, such as athlete level and social media handles for programme applicants, and business details for wholesale customers. Disclosed to our service providers. Not sold or shared.
- Inferences, such as your likely product interests. Disclosed to our service providers, and shared with Meta and Google for advertising.
We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of anyone under 16.
12. Visitors from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, we process your personal information on these legal bases: to perform our contract with you, such as your order or your account; with your consent, such as for marketing and non-essential cookies, which you can withdraw at any time; for our legitimate interests, such as security, fraud prevention, improving our store and managing our business, balanced against your rights; and to comply with our legal obligations.
You have the rights described in Section 10, as well as the right to object to processing based on our legitimate interests, to restrict processing, to data portability, and to complain to your data protection authority. The European Commission and the United Kingdom recognize Canada as providing adequate protection for personal information handled by commercial organizations subject to PIPEDA. Where our providers in other countries process your information, we rely on safeguards such as standard contractual clauses or, where available, the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
13. Children
The Site is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 14, and gear for young athletes should be bought by a parent or guardian. If you believe a child under 14 has given us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
14. Links and social media
The Site links to other websites and to our social media pages. When the Site shows our Instagram feed, your browser loads content from Instagram, which receives your IP address and browser information. Other websites and platforms have their own privacy policies, and this policy does not cover them.
15. Changes to this Privacy Policy
We will update this policy when our practices or the law change. We will post the new version on this page with a new "Last updated" date. If we make significant changes, we will tell you by email or with a notice on the Site before they take effect, and we will ask for your consent where the law requires it.
