Sizing

As a beginner, one should first determine what needs you will be using the gloves for so that you can choose the correct size. Gloves are displayed in ounces (oz.) and the most common sizes are 10 oz, 12 oz, 14 oz and 16 oz. For a general rule, 10 & 12 oz gloves are most popular for bag/pad training while 14 and 16 oz gloves are used for sparring. With women usually using 14 oz and men using 16 oz.

Our 16 oz gloves are perfect for men and women. They are primarily used for sparring, mitt and bag work.

14 oz gloves are typically used by lighter fighters and women for sparring.

10 & 12 oz are great for mitt and bag work

I am a big fan of this brand. I own a pair of their shorts and I’ve had these gloves for a couple of months now. So let’s talk about the gloves.

Techinques serves the broader MMA community, so their gear tends to “cover all the bases”, so to speak. I practice Muay Thai, so I’ll be reviewing these gloves through that lense, but be aware that Tech makes no claims to be sport that genre specific.

I enjoy the feel of these gloves, but they are pretty stiff- as in, your spartner is going to have a stiffer cushion land on their face. These gloves are not for the rookie spar-er. You need to know how to control yourself and pull your punches or you’ll do unintended damage.

These gloves pop on the bag, which is nice, and I like the amount of padding in the palm. The glove is fairly flexible from the palm- id say it’s medium-easy to open your palm. Tech attaches the thumb on these gloves, which I don’t care for. I cut the thumb free the second I pulled it from the box. Again — Muay Thai.

I love the design and the eye that Tech has for aesthetic details.

Overall I’d give these gloves a 4 out of 5. I will return to tech for gear in the future, but I’ll likely leave the gloves to a Thai brand next time.,

Akala Boxing Gloves

This glove looks great. Its leather and is comfy.

It's more of a fist centric glove meaning the knuckle protection is amazing. Very dense foam is focused around the fist box allowing you to land bombs for long rounds. The Velcro does lack support vs much more expensive Thai brands. Therefore in my opinion this is a great training glove for a more experienced fighter with wraps to help brace wrists. The padding in the palm is on the lean side vs blocking but its still adequate for general training and partner drills.

I dont think this is a great sparring glove though until you break it in pretty hard. The foam is very dense and wouldn't be nice to get smashed with these. Def not pillows.

I've hammered very dense Decha, Twins, Top King pads as hard as I can w the 16ozs for months and they held up very well. Velcro is still holding up, no peeling, and foamnis finally soft enough for lighter sparring or hard sparring w head gear and advanced partners.

All in all a fantastic glove dollar for dollar. If this goes on sale it's a no brainer to grab 2 pairs and save the wear and tear on your pretty gloves. These are my go to daily driver sweat mops.
